Indications/Uses
Treatment of HSV infections of the skin, mucous membranes including initial & recurrent genital herpes; suppression of recurrent herpes simplex infections in immune-competent patients; prophylaxis of herpes simplex infections in immune-compromised patients; treatment of herpes zoster infections.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult & childn >2 yr Herpes simplex infection Treatment: 200 mg 5 times daily 4 hrly omitting the night dose for 5 days. Suppression: 200 mg qds. Prophylaxis: 200 mg qds. Treatment of herpes zoster 800 mg 5 times daily 4 hrly omitting the night dose for 7-10 days. Childn <2 yr Treatment & prophylaxis of herpes simplex ½ adult dose. Management of herpes simplex infections (severe renal impairment) 200 mg bd.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: May be taken w/ meals to reduce GI discomfort.
Contraindications
Special Precautions
Lactation.
Adverse Reactions
Skin rashes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pains, mild & transient rises in bilirubin & liver-related enzymes, small increases in blood urea & creatinine, small decreases in hematological indices, headache, mild reversible neurological reactions & fatigue.
